Presentation about 'Yatoo Nature Art Movment in Korea' at Budapest Art Academy by Jeon, Won-gil ¾ßÅõ(å¯÷á)ÀÇ ÀÚ¿¬¹Ì¼ú¿îµ¿ Àü¿ø±æ Nature Art Movement by YATOO I. YATOO YATOO, the Association of Korean Nature Artists, is a group of artists mainly working in Gongju, a small city located along the Geum River, which flows through the heart of mid-west Korea. The main proponents of the YATOO are artists who have been producing art works since 1981 as young artists in their 20s, with love of inspiration which comes from nature. After 25 years, YATOO has obtained sympathy reaction, not only from Korea but also from all around the world, and recently the 'Geumgang Nature Art Biennale' offers opportunities for artists to interact and work with each other globally. Nature Art of YATOO, which shows different aspects and characters influenced by America and Europe, has developed through regular meetings of 'Four Seasons Study'. Artists of YATOO grew up in the natural environment of Korea which changes distinguishably each season. It affected them to work with the ambition of pure creation to reflect the change of the order of nature. They established a methodology of Nature Art which is purely developed by YATOO members by inspiring each other, not only as artists but also as audience and critics about their work. 2. Characteristics and Methods of the Work of YATOO In the 1980s', the way of working of YATOO members was trying to find the balanced approach towards all living nature and the human beings' will of creation, rather than simply pushing human being's artistic ideas into the nature. It is an important characteristic of YATOO to construct art through interaction by keeping the pure natural elements and still expressing human being's ideas thoroughly. Artists of YATOO likes to work in a way of putting themselves into the nature empty handed and following the spontaneous inspirations offered by nature. Therefore they create artwork by performing using their body or using found materials from nature. In fact, there are not many people that saw their actual works at site, since artists of YATOO often make instant performances, installation or simple drawings. Even though the works are photographed they touch us with vivid feeling because they reflect the moment of nature which is familiar in everybody's mind. Simple methods such as piling up, connecting, sticking, throwing, drawing are the basic methods used directly in nature to create artwork, and this way of working makes the observer willing to make nature art themselves. Artwork by YATOO is simple and different from the work which requires much money for production, but it has never lost the creative power as great art. YATOO's pursuit to recover the balanced relationship between nature and human is by suggesting an artistic way connected with nature. Therefore YATOO searches towards the way of art which differs from the art that isolates itself from real life itself, obsessed in its own exaggerated modern materialism. 3. Achievements The achievements of YATOO have expanded through the interaction with foreign artists in international Nature Art exhibitions. The exhibition at the Hamburg Art College in Germany in 1989 became a starting point for this. The Geumgang International Nature Art Exhibition held in Gongju in 1991, subsequently the International Nature Art Exhibition opened in following year 1992 at Schueberg in Germany, and at Samukawa in Japan in 1994. Especially in 1995, 128 nature artists from 23 countries got together and spent 28 days working together. It was really an epochal event. After the experiences of international exhibitions, artists of YATOO tried to achieve a certain diversity and individuality in their own work. In 1980, YATOO concentrated on continuing research and kept communicating by exchanging documentary materials with others. However from 1991 they needed to find unique ways of expression by themselves, as artworks were now required to be remained at site as results. In order to promote the continued research of nature art and continuation of the relationship by interchanging through international exhibitions, YATOO held a Biennale in 2004 which was the first event to characterize Nature Art as an international Biennale. The Geumgang Nature Art Biennale carries out the production of artwork and presentation at the site and runs diverse research programs that are related to Nature art. The Geumgang Nature Art Biennale which celebrates its third exhibition this time, is an important event that indicates the direction of aspects of international Nature Art of the future. One of the remarkable outcome by the Geumgang Nature Art Biennale 2006 is that it established Yeonmi Mountain as a Nature Art Park. It will be filled with artworks and would be a well known art park of Nature Art in the future. In addition, YATOO is planning to build an art museum at Yeonmisan with facilities such as an indoor gallery, reference library and nature art school. It is expecting to become an international Nature Art Center. Another fruit obtained by the members of YATOO with the strong love for Nature Art is that the international residency program opened at the Nature Art House in Gongju- Wongol. It has been built from scratch, bricks to planting trees and flowers by YATOO members' own hands. This program is running along with the Biennale, however it will develop as an independent program in the future. 4. Vision of YATOO Since 1981 YATOO has kept a certain distance from the tendency of Korean art heavily influenced by Western Art, and searched within the Korean attitude towards nature, in order to find their own methodology to express the artistic will of the human instinct. Many artists carried out creating artwork through YATOO. Even after some left YATOO, they are still continuing to develop their ideas and works by reflecting their experiences from nature. There were several hundreds men that produced artwork in the field of YATOO. Artists such as Ko Seung-Hyun, Kang Hee-joon, Ri Eung-woo, Ko Hyun-hie, Kim Hea-sim, Jung Jang-jig, Lee Jong-hyup, Shin Nam-chul, Lee Sun-ju, Heo Gang and Jeon Won-gil are the main members still engaged in YATOO. Rim Dong-sik, Jo Chung-yeon, Yoo Dong-jo, Na Kyeong-ja were starting members of YATOO to pursuit international exchange in the early days. Jeong Yeon-min, Kang Jeon-chung and Lee Seong-won produced excellent artworks through the Four Seasons Study as younger artists. YATOO is making an effort to research and express through the new methodologies of Nature Art that are based on the experiences and connection with nature artists of the world. At the same time the members of YATOO are expanding their vision through solo shows, publishing books and producing artwork with passion and responsibility as contemporary artists in order to open up the new world and also evolve esthetic achievements.
